Ultra Mongoloids

Ryuta Iwashita's performance explores the tension and fluidity of identity around the race and ethnicity in the South, as inspired by the artist's recurring encounters with neighbors addressing him (a Japanese national) by saying, "Ni hao (hello in Chinese)." Hovering between comfort and discomfort, the artist will playfully render the racial and ethnic typology more obscure and insignificant.

The Aesthetics of Garbage: LAB 3

Meryl Murman wonders if empathy is something that can be exercised through simulation? Are there ways of framing figures that give more agency to the performing body within the artifacts created from the figure’s labor? Which images become representational of human tragedy? And when is it/ isn't it ethical to embody someone else’s suffering?

This Pop-Up Performance, Movement and Musical collaboration explores space, the boxes we find ourselves in and the ones that we just may want to break out of. Using physical as well as metaphysical boxes as props, containers, hiding spaces, and who knows what else, these three artists move, dance, play, groove and experiment with each others boundaries and ideas about self.

Artivism presents (Un)Titled: an exploration of labels

"(Un)Titled" uses dance, theatre, song, and film to speak to the concrete and yet fluid concept of identity. How does the body we wear affect our experience in the world? How much do our own biases and conceptions of the world affect the person we are? How often do our perceptions of ourselves hold us back? We have no answers for you, but we rejoice in our communal conversation. Only by naming and interrogating the labels that divide us can we grow a world beyond them.
