International Call 4 Artists!

MAWA / Art Klub Residency Exchange

Visual Artist Residency
Mentoring Artists for Women’s Art (MAWA),
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

APPLICATION DEADLINE: April 30, 2019 at Midnight!
(for residencies between April-December inclusive, 2019)

Would you like to spend 2-4 weeks in residence in Winnipeg, Canada, in the context of a vibrant feminist visual arts centre? Art Klub is currently accepting applications for the MAWA/Art Klub residency exchange program. Women and non-binary visual artists at all stages of their careers are encouraged to apply. Equal consideration will be given to emerging and established artists.

Located in the heart of the city, the MAWA apartment is approximately 700 sq. ft., with four large openable windows, air conditioning and a smart TV monitor. It is fully furnished and includes a kitchen, a dining area, a bathroom with shower, a queen-sized bed, a double futon/couch and a designated parking space. All linens and cooking utensils are provided. The apartment is located on the second floor of 611 Main Street in downtown Winnipeg. It is a walk-up and is not wheelchair accessible. It is animal-free. Artists’ family members are welcome.

MAWA’s apartment is a clean space that is not conducive to many forms of sculpture and painting. However, we can introduce you to other Winnipeg art centres that may be able to help you gain access to the facilities you need. Winnipeg is a city of 700,000 in the geographic centre of Canada. It has a large Indigenous population, and an active and idiosyncratic arts scene.

The successful applicant will be provided with a $300 CDN honorarium for a talk or public presentation of some kind (screening, talk, performance, showcase of work-in-progress, etc.). Artists are responsible for their own travel, living and materials expenses. You are welcome to use this space and time for research, reflection, networking and/or production.

Email applications to and put “Winnipeg” in the subject heading. Applications must consist of a single PDF document, labeled with your name and MAWA (i.e. Jane Doe MAWA). Your PDF should include:

  • A cover letter saying why you would like time at the MAWA residency (goals, rationale)

  • Your first and second choice of preferred dates and duration of residency. Residency available in the months of Oct, Nov and Dec. 2019

  • An artist’s C.V.

  • Up to two web links to videos (total viewing time no more than 5 minutes)

  • Up to 15 images along with image information (title, media, dimensions, date)

The Art Klub partnership with MAWA is intended to increase dialogue between our communities, to create networking opportunities for women artists, and to provide an oasis in which women artists can do whatever they need to do in order to move their practices forward.
