Art Klub Presents: to love the crab

"to love the crab," by Art Klub resident artist, choreographer, and dancer Marion Spencer, is a dance exploring resistance, the feminine, ambition, healing, capitalism's need for relentless growth (and the toll that takes), and transformation. This process takes inspiration from the writings of Marion Woodman, Yrsa Daley-Ward and Barbara Ehrenreich + Deirdre English.

We (Hannah + Emily) began rehearsing this dance in a small living room during spring of 2018. In this compressed context, we quickly realized how necessary it was to pull ourselves out from one another. We began leaning into our similarities and the antagonism that comes with them, and the intimacy that feels possible and also impossible because of them... This resulting performance is steeped in our messy identifications with submissiveness, dominance, aggression, and care. Intimate and evocative scenarios unfold as we move in and out of contact with one another, leaving everything and nothing up for interpretation. Our antics are steeped in curiosity about power and power dynamics—all of which is shaped by our close proximity to you.

A Flighty Piece of Nothing by rj(c)

Victory just celebrated his 75th and is NOT in a wheelchair. He is dancing and playing with me in this collaboration. I started my contemporary dance career at age 41, and before that I had a background in theatre, but hadn't done performance at all for about 10 years. My birthday is coming up. We are together heralding 127 combined years on this planet. Well, that is just a Flighty Piece of Nothing really.
